About Katrina

I fell in love with photography when, as a child, I made a pinhole camera out of a shoebox for a school project. The tiny tear in the cardboard let just enough light in to expose an image and capture a moment in time. I used to practice with that camera in the backyard, taking endless pictures of my friends, trying to find something beautiful. My cameras are a bit more sophisticated now, of course, but I still approach photography the same way I did then: with an open, curious, passionate heart.

As far as I’m concerned, a photo session ought to be fun and energizing. I want you to leave your session feeling more beautiful and confident and comfortable with who you are than when you arrived. If I’m shooting you with your romantic partner, I want you both to feel more connected by the end. And if I’m photographing your family, I want to capture simple moments that express the profound delight of parents and children for one another.

  • I am honest about my own journey, including my struggle to become a mother, as well as the struggle of mothering a child with a severe, life-threatening illness.
  • I am mother to an amazing two-year-old boy who has suffered much and survived much, and who has an unbelievably resilient spirit.
  • I love cold brew coffee, kitchen dances, reading Harry Potter out loud with my husband, and circling with my tribe of trusted friends.
  • I have a weird obsession with airports.
  • When I have free time you can find me on a Stand-Up Paddle Board, doing yoga, painting, or in my garden.

Why
fifty two hundred?

Just after his first birthday, our son was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening primary immune disorder. It was terrifying. His only real hope was a bone marrow transplant. He was transplanted at Duke Children’s Hospital, but a few weeks later, his engraftment failed. His doctors pressed forward with a second transplant, and this time, the transplant was a success. Our son is still healing and trying to regenerate bone marrow. He is not entirely out of the woods, but he is on the path toward healing.

At Duke Children’s Hospital, the pediatric bone marrow transplant unit is number 5200. Our family was forever changed by both the despair and the joy we felt there, and the real-life stories we encountered from other parents refocused our lives and challenged our vocations. Upon our son’s discharge, we found ourselves asking, “How can we live our lives differently in light of what we have seen?”

We want our work at fiftytwohundred to celebrate the joy that is life. We want to help families highlight the areas of love and connection that poke through in their day-to-day, lived experiences. Our hope is that this creative work would empower others to articulate their own life stories, and be a reminder of hope.
